Snowy Hearts Messy Bun Free Pattern

topphotoThe “Messy Bun” hat craze is well underway. Some may worry that these hats just won’t be that warm with a hole in the top. Let me put those fears aside by giving you a messy bun hat that is sure to keep you warm by using soft, extra warm, bulky weight yarn.You can make this pattern in either the Messy Bun look or complete the hat for a warm, cozy, & stylish beanie. For this pattern, you will need the following supplies:

Supplies:
  • Loops & Threads Charisma in 2 colors or any other bulky (5) weight yarn – 1 ball of each color
  • J/6.0 mm crochet hook
  • K/6.5 mm crochet hook
  • Button (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry Needle
Crochet Terms used are in US/American
  • Ch – Chain
  • SlS
  • t – Slip Stitch
  • BLO- Back loop only
  • Hdc – half double crochet
  • Dc – Double Crochet
  • V-Clus – V-Stitch Cluster**
  • F/O – Finish Off
  • Sk – Skip
  • y/o – Yarn Over
  • Hdc2tog – Half Double Crochet 2 stitches together
  • C1 – Color #1
  • C2 – Color #2
  • Slst2tog – Slip Stitch 2 together
  • Slst3tog – Slip Stitch 3 together
GAUGE:

Gauge is important to attain proper size. Gauge swatch was completed using Loops & Threads Charisma and a J/6.0 mm hook.

Gauge is: 2inches = 6 hdc & 4 rows

*The V-Stitch Cluster is performed by y/o, insert hook into stitch, pull up a loop. y/o pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), y/o insert hook into SAME stitch, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), y/o, pull through 2 loops, y/o pull through 3 remaining loops on hook. Repeat 1 more time to complete cluster. -see figure 1

**Mock Cluster *at beginning of each cluster round* Ch 3, DC into same sp as chain, y/o, insert hook into stitch, pull up a loop. y/o pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), y/o insert hook into SAME stitch, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), y/o, pull through 2 loops, y/o pull through 3 remaining loops on hook.

***Carry your yarn up through rows

Ch 2, Ch 3 do NOT count as stitches

Messy Bun:

Brim:

Row 1: With J Hook & C1, ch 8. Turn & slst across (7). Ch1, Turn. Be careful to always turn work in same direction.

Row 2: BLO for the remainder of the brim. SlSt (BLO) 7, ch 1, turn.

Row 3: Repeat row 2 until brim reaches 18.5 inches.

Join 2 ends together by slst in BLO of both edges.

For the remainder of hat, we will be working in the round. (Follow Messy Bun portion until row 9, finish up below pattern)

HAT/MESSY BUN: Switch to K/6.5 mm hook

Rnd 1: Ch 2, HDC in each “bump” *figure 2 of hat brim around, creating 44 stitches. Join to top of ch 2. (44)

*** please note, pattern can be adjusted to meet your needs/size by adding or subtracting stitches in multiples of 4. This will adjust the amount of stitches you will have for the rest of the pattern. For each addition of 4 stitches, you will add 1 V-Clus to your total.

Rnd 2: Switch to C2, **Mock Cluster, skip next 2 sts. *V-Clus in next st, sk next 2* repeat from * to *. Join to top of Ch 3 at beginning. (1 Mock Cluster, 14 V-Clus)

Rnd 3: slst to center of first cluster. Change to C1. Mock Cluster, V-Clus in the center of each V-Clus from the previous round. Join to top of Ch3. (1 Mock Cluster, 14 V-Clus)

Rnd 4: slst to center of first cluster. Change to C2. Mock Cluster, V-Clus in center of each V-Clus from previous round. Join to top of Ch 3. (1 Mock Cluster, 14 V-Clus)

Rnd 5: sl st to center of first cluster. Change to C1. Create Mock Cluster. V-Clus in center of each V-Clus from previous round. Joing to top of Ch 3. (1 Mock Cluster, 14 V-Clus)

Rnd 6: switch to C2. Ch 2. HDC in same as join and each st around. Join to top of ch 2. (30)

Rnd 7: Ch 2. HDC between 1st & 2nd HDC in round. Repeat around. Join to top of ch 2. (30)

Rnd 8: Ch 2, HDC in next. Hdc2tog. *hdc in next, hdc2tog*. Repeat from * to * around. Join to top of ch 2. (20)

Rnd 9: Ch 2. Hdc2tog around. (10) F/O, weave in ends.

*** Continue below for optional brim finish.****

Basic Beanie:

Complete brim & rounds 1-9 for Messy Bun Hat. DO NOT F/O after completing round 9.

Rnd 10: ch2, hdc2tog around. Join to top of ch2. (5)

F/O leaving tail. Using yarn needle, sew small hole together at top with yarn. Weave in ends.

**You can either leave hat slightly pointed, which will round out when fitted to head or you can add a pompom or tassel to finish off beanie.

Optional Brim flap & With Button.

Using J/6.0 mm hook, attach C1 to seam of brim using a slst. Slst across seam (7). Ch 1, turn.

SlSt in BLO across. (7). Ch 1, Turn.

Repeat last row until flap is 10 inches long.

Slst2tog, slst (BLO) in next 3, slst2tog. Ch 1, turn

Slst2tog, slst, slst2tog. Ch1, turn

Slst3tog.

F/O weave in tail.

Using same color, cut off small piece of C1 to sew/slst flap in the middle to keep it from sliding. Sew flap end to brim. Attach button(s) to flap.
